Pre-requisites: The student has fulfilled all prior obligations as regards the studies and exams. The topic selected for the master’s thesis must be an integral part of the study programme and the specific field of orientation.

Course objectives: In the Master’s thesis, the student shows the capability to independently apply their knowledge in scientific research, to interpret a work of art, and to broadly contextualise the selected specific field of study.

Course description: Master’s thesis is an independent reasearch study in which students apply the acquired knowledge of the methodology of research in a selected area, in the domain of undergraduate and graduate (master’s degree) programme of study in Art History. The student selects a topic in consultation with the mentor. The thesis consists of the following chapters: Introduction, Discussion, Conclusions, Literature review, and if necessary, a list of reproductions or other appendices such as chronology, biographies of artists, and the like. The student orally defends the master’s thesis. In the thesis, the student has to show to have perfected the skills mastered in undergraduate studies. They need to prove their capability of: a) independent and articulated analysis, synthesis, inference; b) independent mastery of the methods and procedures of research; c) the development of critical and self-critical thinking; d) independent, articulated and functional application of knowledge in writing a scientific paper, study and discussion.

Learning Outcomes: Students have perfected skills mastered in undergraduate studies. They show the capability of: a) analysis, synthesis, inference; b) mastering the methods and procedures of research; c) the development of critical and self-critical thinking; d) application of knowledge in practice.
