Pre-requisites: Regular attendance at classes. Regular study of literature for teaching units. No special prerequisites.

Course objectives: Improvement of a comprehensive knowledge of the history of developing methods of Art History, from the beginnings of the discipline to the present. Introduction to recent and contemporary methods of Art History, and possibilities and ways of interpreting a work of art.

Course description: Theoretical part: The problem of defining the object of study. Review (mapping): beginnings and foundation of the discipline - from the Renaissance to the 18th century; principles of the discipline and the style; development of Art History in the 19th century. Key changes in methodology, their purpose and objectives during the 20th century. Special emphasis on the application of methods in the History of Architecture and Museology with Heritology. Practical work: Study of historical and theoretical texts, and practice of different methods in analysing a piece of work.

Learning Outcomes: Having acquired a comprehensive insight into different interpretative methods of Art History, the student is qualified a) to analyse a work of art or a phenomenon; b) for critical thinking.
