Pre-requisites: General requirements for the module "Medieval Studies". Some knowledge of latin and at least two european languages.

Course objectives: Acquiring knowledge of the educational system of communes in european urban centers - economic/agricultural, social and politic organization.

Course description: Italian city-states, their political and economic ascension(8th-11th century). Early Venetian history, Pisa, Port centers and Amalfi. Cities and the creation of communes in the Holy Roman Empire and in Central Europe. "Magdeburg Rights"
