Yugoslavian foreign relations: the world in between wars and the Cold War world

Pre-requisites: Completed undergraduate studies in history or masters in history, regular class attendance and fulfillment of academic requirements; the ability to independently produce professional and scientific work.

Course objectives: Deepening knowledge on the subject; applying the scientific method in working with subject material related to history of the land and foreign relations of Yugoslavia; independently conducting research; professionally and critically evaluating historical sources and historiographic texts.

Course description: The theoretical component of the course encompasses lectures on the subject of the international position of Yugoslavia, its relations with countries to the East and West, neighbours and Third world countries. We will examine the essence of foreign affairs in Yugoslavia between wars and post-war, the battle to maintain independence, confidence in the League of Nations and United Nations, relationships with Balkan neighbors and great European powers, maintaining traditional alliances, seeking new international positions and situations, standing united against the race to arms, politics of different spheres of interest, colonialism and a block division of the world. Practical component: mastering the scientific method; teaching students to conduct independent research and critically analyze relevant historical sources and historiographic literature; nurturing critical thinking, the culture of professional dialogue and precisely stating ones opinion and knowledge in both oral and written format.

Learning Outcomes: Thematic knowledge of the subject, an understanding of the historical processes, ideas, ideologies, movements, people, events and balance of a particular time; examining the role of Yugoslavia in European and World politics and learning the characteristics of its foreign relations.
