Recommended Semester: 8
ECTS Credits Allocated: 6.00
Pre-requisites: -

Course objectives: Gaining additional knowledge about the crusading movement and its political, social and cultural impact on Southeastern Europe, as a perennial meeting place and borderland between different civilizations.

Course description: At lectures, students are first reminded of the general history of the crusading movement and then introduced in detail to crusading activity in Southeastern Europe. Emphasis is placed on the gradual change of the role of this region from a transit area (11th and 12th century) to one of the key areas of crusading activity (13th-15th century), as well as on various types of crusades conducted there (against heretics, against schismatics, against infidels). In practical classes, key events and processes presented in lectures are examined in detail on the basis of sources, with maximum use of the opportunities for development of critical thinking offered by contrasting information coming from different sides.

Learning Outcomes: Acquiring consciousness about the multi-centennial presence of the crusading idea in Southeastern Europe and knowledge about the course, outcome and heritage of crusading activity in the region, as well as its place in relations between different civilizations present in that area.
