Pre-requisites: The program will be structured around students background knowledge. Students that did not take Sociocultural Anthropology at the previous studies will have to pass a supplemental exam that deals with basic concepts.

Course objectives: Introduction to current directions in social and cultural anthropology. Independent study on particular topics in sociocultural anthropology.

Course description: Current directions in sociocultural anthropology: revision and critique of traditional anthropology, symbolic-interpretive anthropology, anthropology and semiotics, postmodernism and anthropology, anthropology as cultural critique, culture and gender studies, cognitive anthropology. Changes in concepts: starting with the concept of society to habitus and symbolic communities, from concepts of universal to particular, intercultural, primitive/modern to global/glocal, rational to mimicry, representation to interpretation, science to cultural critique and cultural politics, nature to science.

Learning Outcomes: This course will enable students to independently and thoroughly study current movements in anthropology.
