Archaeology

History

The establishment of the Library of the Department of Archaeology is closely associated with Mihajlo Valtrović, who was inducted as the very first Professor of Archaeology at the Great School in 1881. Within the framework of what was then called the Archaeology Cabinet, Professor Valtrović started the first collection of specialized books related to his archaeology lectures. Thus the first books entered into the library's inventory were his recommendations from the Archaeology Cabinet, in the 1880-1881 academic year there also followed the first purchases financed by the Archaeology Cabinet. Among the exceptionally valuable books already at the library collection, there can also be found those that arrived at the library by way of reparation after the World War I.

Collections

Today, the library collection consists of 18,000 monographs, 650 domestic and foreign titles and journals, 8,800 bound volumes, about 250 doctoral and master theses, and numerous geographical maps and audio, CD and DVD compilations. The legacies of Professor Dragoslav Srejović, Professor Karen Vitelli and Professor Gordana Marjanović-Vujović form a separate collection.

Catalogues

Until October 2003, the search within the collections was possible via an alphabetical authors' and subject catalogues when computerized publications cataloguing system was started. Today, the online system of Virtual Libraries of Serbia (COBISS) allows users to electronically search the engine containing all monographic publications published since 2000.
