Course objectives: The course aims to allow archaeology students to become immediately knowledgeable on the basic key concepts of archaeology. Particularly, the course focuses on archaeology’s subject matter, history of ideas, foundational concepts, and current theoretical directions developing in the field.

Course description: The course is designed as a general introduction to archaeology. Over two semesters, the basic concepts of archaeology and its place in society are covered. A thorough review of the history of archeological ideas, including theoretical tendencies starting from their antiquarian beginnings to the newest methodological and theoretical approaches, is taught throughout the course. The course consists of three separate sections: 1) the history of archaeology, from first recognizing artifacts as remnants of the past, to unilineal evolutionism and the discovery of ancient civilizations, to the culture-historical. Serbia and southeastern Europe comes under direct focus; 2) Newer theoretical approaches from processual archaeology to differing perspectives on post-processual interpretations of the past; 3) Various fields within archaeology itself, such as social, economic or cognitive, as well as its ethic aspects and the importance of this discipline within the contemporary world.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student should possess a clear understanding of the theories and discourse of current archaeological trends and the most current ideas in the discipline. Students should as well be able to communicate in an international context of archaeological research and collaboration.
