Aesthetics I

Pre-requisites: None

Course objectives: Student should get introduced to aesthetic ideas of Plato, Aristotle, Kant and Hume; student should be able to understand historico-hermeneutical context of the formation of these ideas and to understand their mutual relationship and relevance for aesthetics.

Course description: Content of the lectures consists of presentation of the basic ideas of philosophical aesthetics, especially in presentation of the basic ideas and concepts of Plato's, Aristotle's, Hume's and Kant's aesthetics. The historico-hermeneutical context of the formation of their aesthetical doctrines is interpreted and their relevance to the contemporary philosophical aesthetics is considered as well. Practical part of the course consists of group interpretation of the pre-reading and prepared texts from the original literature, especially those texts for which it is assumed that students will have problems to deal with without expert assistance of instructors.

Learning Outcomes: Introducing students to the basic ideas of philosophical aesthetics and providing them with the ability to understand historico - hermeneutical context of the formation of the basic ideas and concepts of Plato's, Aristotle's, Kant's and Hume's aesthetics, as well as to mutually compare them.
